Saving Orchids
Product Description
The inspiring story of how and why orchids are protected globally, keeping them from extinction and conserving our planet’s rich biodiversity.
Authors: Philip Seaton and Lawrence W. Zettler, 304 pages, 100 illustrations, 234 x 156 mm. Hardback, ISBN 9781842468319, Kew Publishing, 2025.
Orchid fever began in the nineteenth century, when orchid hunters extracted the delicate plants from the tropics by the millions. Their aura of mystery and romance persists, making them vulnerable to extinction. From seed banking to community education, Saving Orchids shows how and why orchids are protected globally, keeping them from extinction and conserving our planet’s rich biodiversity.
In this captivating book, the authors bring us the inspiring stories of people around the world working to conserve orchids. Opening with the story of Florida’s iconic ghost orchid, of which fewer than 1,500 plants remain, we learn of the work undertaken to save this rare plant from poachers and ensure its long-term conservation. The authors take us on a global tour through temperate and tropical zones, from Hawaii’s rarest orchid to unique and rare species in Australia. The book covers all these stories and more, with cultural history and scientific discoveries peppered throughout the text.
Heavily illustrated throughout with stunning colour photographs, this hopeful story celebrates the work of conservationists overcoming unique challenges to save the treasured orchid plant family and inspire us all to participate in orchid conservation.
