Marianne North - A Very Intrepid Painter: revised edition
Product Description
This is the story of Marianne North, a Victorian botanical artist and traveller who left an extraordinary legacy.
About the Book:
Marianne North was a Victorian botanical artist and traveller who left an extraordinary legacy. From 1871 to 1884 she travelled and painted extensively, creating distinctive oil portraits of the world’s flora. In the early 1880s she established a gallery at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, displaying over 800 paintings and almost 250 wood samples in a hanging scheme that remains to this day.
This beautiful gift book reproduces many of North’s stunning artworks and tells the story of her life and travels, drawing primarily on her posthumously published autobiography. Six key themes from the collection are explored, and the history of the gallery is included alongside an account of the contemporary restoration and conservation project.
This revised edition of the bestseller features a foreword by Chris Mills, former Head of Kew’s Library, Art & Archives and has a larger format, allowing the artworks to truly shine.
