This beautiful pocketbook from Kew features Japanese artwork from Honzō Zufu, a rare and valuable compendium of plants dating from the late Edo period, compiled by Kan-en IWasaki. 40 illustrations are gorgeously reproduced from the precious copy held in Kew’s Library, Art and Archives.
The Library, Art and Archives at Kew is one of the most extensive botanical libraries in the world, with the oldest item dating back to the 1370s. In this new pocketbook series from Kew, each book presents 40 botanical paintings from the collection, illustrating the variety within each plant group, as well as the diversity of the collection and artistic styles.
An introduction by botanist Martyn Rix and botancial artist Masumi Yamanaka tells the story of Honzō Zufu, and detailed captions accompany each painting, making this a charming keepsake.
