    The Library and Archives at Kew is one of the most extensive botanical libraries in the world, with the oldest item dating back to the 1370s.     An introductory chapter by Kew experts Melanie-Jayne Howes and Eliot Jan-Smith provides an overview of this plant group, and extended captions accompany each painting.     About the Author:

  • Melanie-Jayne Howes: is a registered pharmacist and Chartered Chemist. She obtained a PhD in pharmacognosy prior to her appointment as a phytochemist at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Her research has focused on investigating the scientific basis for the uses of plants, particularly those used as medicines and for human health. She also leads research on the chemical authentication of plants at Kew, using different techniques in analytical chemistry. She has written numerous scientific publications on the medicinal uses of plants and their constituents, and on their analysis.
  • Eliot Jan-Smith: works in the Natural Product Chemistry team at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, analyzing plants and their chemical compounds, in particular for their pharmaceutical or medical applications.
