Author: Dennis G. Fowler. 294pp. 295 x 210mm. Paperback, ISBN 9781842464601, Kew Publishing 2011.

This book lists over 400 Zambian plant remedies with their scientific and common names, a brief description of plant and habitat, and the plant parts used with the recipes and areas, and scientific research where relevant. A glossary also provides over 4000 local plant names linked to their scientific names.

After reading history at Oxford and theology at London, Dennis Fowler became a Methodist minister in 1952. He and his wife Ena worked for eight years as missionaries in Zambia, mainly with the Ila people on the Kafue Flats. His interest in ethnobotany was first aroused by his discovery that the Ila language has over 740 words for trees and shrubs. He also wanted to help in the search for a cheap local cure for malaria, having himself suffered badly from the disease. He is the author of Zambian Plants: Their vernacular names and uses (Kew Publishing, 2007).
