Description

Petra Börner was commissioned by Kew Gardens to create an artwork celebrating the new Autumn season. 'Spell' is inspired by the powerful energies at work in nature at the end of summer when new forces take charge and bring us its exuberant colour display.

The artwork is inspired by ferns, one of the oldest plants ever recorded, their uncurling is both seductive and mysterious. Ferns have poetic and spiritual significance, it's said to uncoil magical properties and to cast spells. Covering the ground, hiding or sheltering the elements below, its movements in the Autumn breeze, a slow dance accompanying the sound of the trees.

In Spell, the fern is illustrated at it’s prime, singing out in a palette of burnt orange, firmly rooted against the lush, nourishing soil.

The Spell artwork was originally created in Petra’s cut paper signature style and is now available as a print in a limited edition exclusively at Kew. Other work feature on the cover of Carlos Magdalena’s new book, The Plant Messiah, also available at Kew.
