Michael Michaud Holly Brooch

Beautiful holly brooch cast in bronze with garnet berries.

This beautiful holly brooch by Michael Michaud features garnet holly berries and is cast in a mould created directly from a holly branch

The jewellery is made by creating moulds directly from botanical elements in a process similar to lost-wax casting. While traditional lost-wax casting begins with a hand-carved model of wax, Michael Michaud instead uses an actual leaf, branch or flower in place of the wax model. A mould is created around the botanical element and as it is heated the plant matter burns away and leaves behind a beautifully detailed mould of itself.

Common holly, Ilex aquifolium, is the most widely grown holly in British gardens but there are 500 to 600 other species worldwide. Its distinctive spiny leaves deter grazing animals and protect birds from predators as they feed on its bright red berries. In Britain and many other western cultures, holly is closely associated with Christmas. It makes an ideal festive decoration, with its bright red berries set against dark green, glossy leaves. The tradition of holly decoration predates Christianity and probably began with the early pagans of Europe, who brought holly inside in the winter to keep evil spirits away. The Romans sent holly branches with presents during the December festival of Saturnalia.
