This magnet shows the beautiful Kew Gardens Sunflower poster, produced in 1937 by the designer Betty Swanwick, and taken from London Transport Museum’s archive.

Kew Gardens has collaborated with the London Transport Museum to bring you this fantastic range.  All designs are taken from the London Transport Museum’s rich archive of Kew Posters and were designed by Betty Swanick, Alfred Fontville de Breanski, Dora M Batty and f Gregory Brown between 1915 and 1940.

Betty Swanwick (Sunflowers and Primrose Poster), born 1915 in Forest Hill, London, died 1989.

Biography: Betty Swanwick was a painter, illustrator, designer and muralist. She was encouraged to draw from an early age by her father, the marine artist Henry Gerard Swanwick. She painted in watercolour, illustrated her own novels, as well as designing posters for London Transport and an album cover for the band Genesis. In 1936 Swanwick began teaching at Goldsmiths College, where she was Head of Illustration between 1948 and 1961. She also taught at the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools.
