This handy handbag mirror depicts workers tending to the grounds during the Second World War, taken from Kew's rich Archive Library.
In 1941 fourteen women were called upon to fill the roles left vacant in Kew Gardens by the men who had left for war. They were shortly joined by a further fourteen. For many of these gardeners this was their first experience of paid work and was the first time visitors had seen women working in such a public place. One gardener recalls cries of 'Look at the Lady Gardeners!'
