Description

Charles Samuel Pollock Parish (1822–1897) collected orchids for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and the orchid nursery of Messrs Hugh Low & Co whilst a chaplain in Burma with the armies of the Honourable East India Company. He discovered many horticulturally desirable species, many named in his honour, including Paphiopedilum parishii, Dendrobium parishii, Phalaenopsis parishii and Cymbidium parishii. He and his wife Eleanor produced exquisite illustrations of many species now held in the type collections at Kew, and until this publication, never been seen outside of Kew. An up-to-date taxonomic treatment of the species is provided together with his itinerary and a map.

Dudley Clayton is an Honorary Research Associate at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, specialising in Asiatic orchids. He has examined all of the Parish archives at Kew, and elsewhere, to produce this comprehensive account of the man and his work. His other publications include The Genus Coelogyne and The Genus Calanthe
